METHOD
To create her work, Chung uses layers of hanji pasted onto wood. These layers are then sanded and sculpted to create unique images. No pigments are used, rather the artwork is a hanji collage.

HISTORY
The tradition of “hanji” (Korean paper) dates back to the 3rd century. Hanji is made from the inner bark from mulberry tree, which is native to the Korean mountainside. The traditional paper was originally used to record the official history of the Korean dynasties. Over the next several centuries, it became widely cultivated in Korea and the use expanded both as an art medium and for creating household items.
